Prediabetes and Diabetes Type 2

Studies suggest diabetes prevalence has as much as tripled in recent decades, and data show about two in five Americans will develop type 2 diabetes at some point in their lives. An estimated 86 million Americans have prediabetes, but only one in nine of these people knows they are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a condition in which blood glucose or hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes.

Eighty-six million adults in the United States have prediabetes, but 90 percent of them don’t know they have it! Up to 30 percent of people with prediabetes will develop diabetes within five years.

Important key messages:

  • Prediabetes is a serious condition: It raises your risk of heart attack and stroke and poses a very high risk of eventually progressing to full-blown diabetes

  • Prediabetes is treatable: The good news is that most patients with prediabetes can avoid or delay developing diabetes by losing weight, becoming more active and eating more healthfully.

According to the CDC, you may be at risk for prediabetes if you:

  • Are 45 years of age or older

  • Are overweight

  • Have a family history of type 2 diabetes

  • Have high blood pressure

  • Are physically active fewer than three times per week

  • Ever had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes) or gave birth to a baby that weighed more than nine pounds

Prediabetes symptoms include:

  • Feeling tired and hungry all the time

  • Poor sleep

  • Difficulty focusing

  • Neuropathy (numbness, tingling in feet and hands)1

  • Skin darkens in the neck, armpits, and skin folds

  • Developing many small skin tags

  • Weight gain, particularly around the waist

How do I know if I have Prediabetes?

At least one the following blood tests:

  1. Fasting blood sugar of 100-125 mg/dL on two separate occasions

  2. HbA1c of 5.7-6.4%

  3. An oral glucose tolerance test that shows a blood sugar of 140 mg/dL or above after 2 hours.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms include:

  • Fatigue

  • Increased thirst and dry mouth

  • Increased urination

  • Frequent vaginal or urinary infections

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Increased hunger

  • Neuropathy (numbness, tingling in feet and hands)

  • Blurred vision

  • Slow-healing sores or frequent infections

  • Weight gain

How do you know if you have type 2 diabetes?

At least one the following blood tests:

  1. Fasting blood sugar of 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate occasions

  2. HbA1c of 6.5% or higher

  3. An oral glucose tolerance test that shows a blood sugar of 200 mg/dL or higher after 2 hours

The problem:

  • Most people with type 2 diabetes are required to take several medicines to control it. Over time the efficacy of the medicines diminish and its necessary to increase the dosage or change the types of medicines, often this can be more expensive medicines or even insulin which could also affect the patients mentally as many people are afraid of daily injections.

  • It is very common with people suffering with type 2 diabetes to be confused about which are the best foods to control their condition, this lack of understanding leads to failure diets that only leaves people frustrated while their health continues to deteriorate.

  • Some diabetes medications can cause weight gain and even if you follow strict “low calorie diets” it could still be very difficult to lose the weight which leaves patients feeling ashamed and depress.

  • Diabetes that is not under control is often the cause of other conditions such as, Heart problems, kidney failures, nerve damage and it even increases the risk of cancer.

  • While type 2 diabetes is often the main illness, people often suffer of high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol when dealing with this condition.

  • A common misconception is that type 2 diabetes is not curable or controllable because it has been in your family’s history, this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
